Essaouira didn’t earn the nickname “the Wind City of Africa” by accident. Thanks to the trade winds that funnel down Morocco’s Atlantic coast, you can kitesurf here for most of the year, but some months are truly special. Here’s our local guide.

The short answer

March to October is prime time. The thermal wind machine switches on almost every afternoon, blowing a steady side-shore breeze across our huge sandy bay. These are ideal conditions for learning and progressing.

Month by month

April to June: the sweet spot

Spring brings reliable wind, warming air and fewer crowds. The bay is uncrowded, the light is beautiful, and conditions are forgiving for beginners. If you want space to learn, this is our favourite season to teach.

July and August: peak wind, peak energy

High summer means the strongest, most consistent wind of the year. That is great for learners who want guaranteed sessions and for independent riders chasing long, powered runs. The town is buzzing with festivals and travellers, so book lessons and accommodation early.

September and October: golden autumn

The wind softens slightly but stays dependable, the ocean is at its warmest, and Essaouira slips back into its relaxed rhythm. A brilliant time for a longer stay that mixes kitesurfing with surfing and yoga.

November to February: the quiet season

Winter wind is less regular, but when the forecast lines up you’ll score beautiful sessions with almost nobody on the water. This is also when the surf pumps. Many riders come for a kite + surf combo and let the forecast decide each day.

What makes Essaouira so good for learning?

  • A huge, sandy, crescent-shaped bay with no rocks, no reef and plenty of standing-depth water
  • Side-shore wind, the safe direction, pushing you along the beach rather than out to sea
  • Consistency: during the season, the afternoon thermal wind is about as close to guaranteed as wind gets
  • Flat-ish water inside the bay, friendly for water starts and first rides

Our advice

If your dates are flexible, aim for May, June or September: solid wind, warm days, and a calmer town. Whatever month you choose, our team watches the forecast daily and schedules your lessons around the best window. That’s included in every booking.
