Thinking about standing on a surfboard for the very first time? Essaouira is one of the best places in the world to do it. Here’s what to expect, and why so many beginners leave here hooked for life.
Why Essaouira is perfect for your first wave
Morocco’s Atlantic coast gets swell all year, but what makes our corner of it special for beginners is the variety of gentle, sandy beach breaks within a short drive:
- Essaouira Bay: protected, mellow and sandy. The ideal classroom.
- Sidi Kaouki: a long, open beach with consistent learner waves
- Imsouane: home to one of the longest, softest rides in Africa
Your coach picks the spot each morning based on swell, tide and wind, so you always learn in the friendliest conditions available.
What happens in your first lesson
- Beach basics: safety, ocean awareness, and how to pop up on dry land
- White-water waves: riding the broken waves in waist-deep water, where almost everyone stands up on day one
- Catching it yourself: timing, paddling and reading the wave
Everything is included: board, wetsuit, leash and a coach who genuinely celebrates every wave you catch.
How fast will I progress?
Honestly? Faster than you think.
- After 2 hours most people are standing and riding white water
- After 4 to 6 hours you’ll be catching waves with less and less help
- After 8 hours many beginners are paddling into small unbroken “green” waves, which is the moment the addiction becomes permanent
That’s why our lessons come in 2, 4, 6 and 8-hour options. Pick the block that matches your goals, and upgrade any time.
What should I bring?
Just swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. Everything else (board, wetsuit, wax, stoke) is on us.
When should I come?
There are waves year-round. Autumn to spring brings the most consistent swell; summer serves smaller, extra-friendly waves that are perfect for first-timers (and pairs beautifully with an afternoon kite lesson).
